Grist’s Kate Sheppard is doing a great job covering this markup and so are the folks at Climatebill. We’re going to step back and cover this with less immediacy and more depth on some issues that are being raised and numbers thrown around.
Kate’s tweets can be followed on twitter at kate_sheppard or online at the link above.
Climatebill’s tweets are at climatebill (appropriately) or online — also linked above.

Funny… Mike Doyle (D-PA) says he can count on one finger the number of times Republican Cliff Stearns (FL) has shown independence from the party line. Lee Terry (R-NB) shouts out, “Which finger?” (Joe Barton predicts this will make Youtube).

Markey responds to charge that the bill is socialist because government chooses winners (solar and wind, not nukes). He says that federal gov. has given nuclear industry $125 billion over the years and $5 billion to solar and wind, together. Wonders why it isn’t socialism when the money went to nukes but is when more will now go to solar and wind.

Joe Barton (R-TX) says nukes are zero emission, domestic and clean…. The only part of his claim that isn’t contentious is the “domestic” one. And some would probably argue that, too.

Roy Blunt (R-MO) argues that if nuclear isn’t defined as renewable it should be removed from the bill altogether, not include new nukes but exclude existing ones…that’s not what he really want, though. He wants to broaden incentives for nuclear.

Cliff Stearns (R-FL) offers the nuclear amendment….Chair Henry Waxman (D-CA) says nuclear plants are included as renewable because they’re not — they require new uranium to generate power and uranium is finite…Stearns argues that nukes emit no CO2.
