Do Solar Batteries Need Ventilation?

To achieve an off-grid living, you need to detach yourself from as many utility services as possible, and one of them is electricity. That is the reason why you need a battery bank for your off-grid solar system.

A battery bank stores electrical energy produced by the solar panels for later use. But do solar batteries need ventilation? How else can you care for your solar batteries and increase their lifespan? Let us find out!

What are Types of Solar Batteries?

What are Types of Solar Batteries?

To answer a question on solar battery ventilation, we first have to look at the battery options for your off-grid solar system. There are four common types of these batteries in the market today. They include:

  • Lead-acid batteries
  • Lithium-ion batteries
  • Nickel-based batteries
  • Flow batteries

Lead-acid batteries

Lead-acid batteries are the most common solar batteries for an off-grid solar system because they are inexpensive. However, they have disadvantages, as we will see shortly.

There are two types of lead-acid batteries: flooded and sealed lead-acid batteries. Whether you will ventilate your solar batteries or not will depend on the type you choose for your system.

Flooded lead-acid (FLA) batteries

These are deep-cycle solar batteries used for storing electrical energy in chemical form. As the name suggests, they use an acid to store energy during charging and release it during discharging. In the process, hydrogen gas is released.

Since FLA batteries release hydrogen gas from their electrolytes, you need to top them with distilled water regularly. Also, the gas needs to be vented out of the battery and out of the room.

Hydrogen gas is toxic. This means any room with FLA batteries needs to be ventilated. The gas must find its way out and be replaced by fresh oxygen-rich air.

Sealed lead-acid batteries

Sealed lead-acid batteries are spill-proof and are generally safe because they do not emit hazardous gas. You can also safely install them in any orientation without affecting their performance or jeopardizing their safety.

The two types of sealed lead-acid batteries are the gel and absorbent gas mat (AGM) batteries, but gel is the most common.

These batteries require little or no maintenance. No regularly top up the electrolyte with water needed as you would with their flooded counterparts.

Sealed lead-acid batteries do not require ventilation since there are no gases emitted. You can safely install them in a box and forget about them. They are also advantageous for an off-grid solar system because they last longer and do not discharge quickly.

Lithium-ion Batteries

This is the second in our category. It is a relatively new technology commonly used in the manufacturing of laptop batteries. They have, however, become very popular in designing an off-grid solar system.

Lithium-ion batteries are more expensive. That is because of the tons of benefits over lead-acid batteries. They are maintenance-free. They are safer as no gases are emitted.

If you have limited space for a battery bank, choosing lithium-ion is the best option. No ventilation is required for them, and they are smaller compared to lead-acid solar batteries. Also, they are more energy-efficient and last longer.

Nickel-Based Batteries

Nickel-based batteries came to the market because they have a higher ampere-hour rating than lead-acid and lithium-ion batteries. However, they are not widely used because of the toxic cadmium used. In fact, they are banned in some countries.

Nickel solar batteries are only suited for large-scale off-grid power systems such as utility solar energy storage. Your engineer or technician is unlikely to recommend them to you for your home-based off-grid solar system.

Flow Batteries

This is the newest technology in solar battery manufacturing. These batteries use water as an electrolyte and store energy due to a chemical reaction. They are yet to rock the market because of their high price and bulkiness.

Again, you are likely to buy flow batteries for your system because of the aforementioned reasons. They are only recommended for large-scale applications because of their 100% depth of discharge and long lifespan of up to 30 years.

Back to the question, do solar batteries need ventilation? It depends on the type of solar battery you are going for. Sealed lead-acid and lithium-ion solar batteries do not require ventilation. You only need to when using FLA batteries because of the gas emitted.

Solar Battery Maintenance

Solar Battery Maintenance

Installing a solar battery bank for your off-grid power system will cost you a significant amount of money. For that reason, you need to make them last as long as possible. Luckily, there are many ways of caring for your solar batteries, and we will highlight them here.

Mighty Max Battery ML35-12 – 12V 35AH DC DEEP Cycle SLA Solar Energy Storage Battery

Mighty Max Battery ML35-12 - 12V 35AH DC DEEP Cycle SLA Solar Energy Storage Battery
  • ML35-12 SLA is a 12V 35AH Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) rechargeable maintenance free battery - UL Certified
  • Dimensions: 7.76 inches x 5.12 inches x 7.01 inches. Listing is for the Battery and Screws only. No wire harness or mounting accessories included.
  • SLA / AGM spill proof battery has a characteristic of high discharge rate, wide operating temperatures, long service life and deep discharge recover.
  • Do not overcharge or over-discharge your solar battery – Ensure healthy charging and discharging is using a solar charge controller. Your off-grid solar system has to include an appropriate charge controller to extend the lifespan of the battery bank.
  • Refill FLA batteries – You need to regularly top up the electrolyte in your FLA battery with distilled or battery water. But you need to leave about 6 inches of space in each battery chamber for internal ventilation.
  • Ensure batteries are at the right temperature – Every solar battery comes with the manufacturer’s specifications on the operating temperature. You need to maintain it to extend the lifespan of the cells.
  • Regularly clean the batteries – You need to clean the leads and remove dust and any foreign materials on top of your solar batteries.
  • Ensure proper battery orientation – This is necessary for FLA batteries to avoid acid spillage. You also need ventilation in the room.
  • Monitor state of charge – Solar batteries age with time. Use your multimeter to check the charging state of individual batteries at no load. If it fails to charge fully, it is an indication of the need to replace it.

The Verdict

An off-grid solar system needs a battery bank. Many types of solar batteries exist in the market, and the one you choose depends on the budget and other requirements. FLA batteries require proper ventilation and should only be mounted upright.

No ventilation is required for sealed lead-acid batteries and lithium-ion batteries. Additionally, these batteries can perform well with little to no maintenance. In general, proper battery maintenance extends their lifespan.
